review 1: I wanted to like this book, and I did in at least a few ways: the writing (better than a lot I have read), the character (for the most part), and the setting (well described). What I did not like: the character has magical powers but they are not used or described very well, the character has a bow (in the vein of "black blade" of Elric) but doesn't use it much, and the character is mercurial so that I can't predict what she'll do (good) but I don't know her well (bad). I could forgive many of these failings if the books were longer, and I did for books 1 and 2, but they are too short, and after reading one I don't feel like much has happened. I also don't feel they typically end at a good stopping point. That's just my two cents.
review 2: This was definitely
... moremy favorite of the series so far and I am bummed that there is no solid release date for the fourth. I like Ilan and her faults. I think it makes her real. She was raised by thieves and with a loyalty to her master (The Hand) and it shows in her thoughts and actions even though they make no sense to a normal person. I enjoyed watching her grow and realize the error of that way of thinking and the ability to start looking beyond herself more. My favorite part was the ending, meeting the praetor, who of course I love because he is dark, menacing, and mysterious. I want to know more about this antagonist and hopefully will learn how he came from the young man on the horse that her mother pointed out, to the powerful praetor. I love Ilan's spirit and even at the end she is going to give it her all and try and kill the praetor (and for some reason it doesn't work, hopefully that will be explained more, exactly how he did it). Romance is my favorite and it has been missing from most of these books and that has given us readers a chance to really get to know Ilan instead of focusing on and end all. But, that being said I am exited to see where the fourth book goes with Terrac and with Ilan in service to the enemy! less
