Surgery Day / In The Hospital

This post has fewer bits of data but more thoughts about my experience.  It covers both Tuesday, September 19th and Wednesday, September 20th since I don’t really recall what occurred on each day individually.

Weight 16:4.6 (228.6 lbs)

I did not get to eat any food today and with just liquids yesterday, it is not at all surprising that my weight is down.

I have been doing the underwear and camisole thing for my photos but I put on a sports bra to wear to surgery so I decided to snap my photo in that, partially to see my bare stomach which will soon be festooned with scars.

My report time for surgery was confusing as they had changed it just the day before then, once I arrived, it was pushed back again.  I guess when they have one little thing that takes longer, it affects the rest of the patients like dominoes and I was the last one scheduled that day.  Of course, we were likely scheduled too close together anyway due to the assembly line feel to Barix Clinics but I don’t actually know when I have been to a doctor’s office and been seen on time, so that is a systemic problem that I think we can blame mostly on insurance companies.

I was super thirsty by the time I was actually being prepped for surgery.  I had only one sip of water, which I was allowed to take my reduced pills.

When they weighed me before surgery (and before putting fluids in me via IV) I did not take note of the exact number, but I think it was around 229, which makes sense with what I got at home.

Speaking of the IV, they were giving me one with glucose or dextrose or something so when they took my blood sugar, it was in the high 200s, which is terrifying.  After that, they switched my IV to saline.

Anyway, I did a lot of waiting around but my dad was there with me and the nurses were all quite nice so I guess it was as pleasant as that sort of thing can possibly be.  I did not read the book I had planned to at all but I did spend some time on the phone with my brother and then an aunt, so that was nice.

Medications:

  • 150 mg Sertraline
  • 112 mcg Synthroid

Going forward, I will take these two medications (plus the 10 mg Cetirizine) every day but some of the others are discontinued and some reduced.  So, I will try to specify the medications I am taking beyond those three on a daily basis although it will likely be the same for a while.

Of course, I don’t remember the actual surgery itself but I am told it went well.  My first post-surgery memory is of saying something like “I want my mommy” and hearing in response “You’re thirty-four years old, you can’t have your mommy.”  I don’t know if that actually happened or if I imagined it but either way, I told my dad about it and he seemed a little taken aback that I didn’t ask for him
