review 1: I've just discovered Caitlin Moran, and I feel like a child on Christmas morning who still believes in Santa and has been given a fantastic gift. I realize this book is not for everyone, but I loved it! Darkly funny, scathingly honest, Johanna's bildungsroman tale doesn't sugarcoat her journey or her mistakes (are they mistakes?) or offer an ending of awakening where she realizes the error of her ways, and that is what keeps this book authentic. She's 17 when the book ends, and the author stays true to Joanna's personality. I laughed out loud, rolled my eyes, scoffed, and even guffawed at parts of this story. The opening scene sets the stage for the tone of the entire book. Loved the time period (1990s) and all of the musical, movie, and musician references as well as the ... moreliterature references. Some people will hate this book - too much sex, Johanna's is unrepentant, and her parents are certainly not role models, but I am giddy with delight over this gift from Moran. People who like this book, should think about reading the nonfiction book Girls to the front: the true story of the riot grrrl revolution.
review 2: Is it weird to think of this as YA Fiction? There's so much explicit fucking, but kids read about fucking, too, right? Anyway, I related to the parts about fucking. About feeling useful and viewing it from the man's perspective. Ultimately, it's kind of fucked up, the way one can learn sex as being solely about the other person getting off, but you can see the loneliness from which it springs, the feeling of not being enough or deserving, not asking yourself if this is what you want, but just feeling grateful to be wanted at all. There's a glimpse of that. I could've used books like this growing up. less
