Carina Rodriquez, 23, was murdered early Friday morning at some luxury apartments on the canal in downtown Indianapolis. She was working out in the locked building when 25-year-old Cody Weir knocked on the door and she let him inside the fitness area. He told police that he remembered being angry and getting a drink of water at the water fountain to calm himself down but ended up hitting Rodriquez with a dagger-like knife. According to the IndyStar the victim was found later that morning by two other tenants in a pool of her own blood – a friend of Weir’s turned him in after seeing his photo on the news and Weir with bloody shoes.
This case was shocking to me because the suspect is a man that went to the same high school that I graduated from and lived in my hometown; seeing his mugshot on the news and posted all over social media made me look more closely at the case. It is still shocking to me that crimes can be committed by anyone that has been a part of your life and can cause such a ruckus in even the smallest of towns.
This is a story that impacts students at Indiana State University because they too may know a criminal and should be more aware of their surroundings as well as the people they associate with. The scene of the crime was a “luxury apartment” building with locked doors – the victim most likely felt safe even when she let her murderer into the building. She was working out in the space that she called home and did not consider the fact that she could be in any sort of danger. Students at Indiana State University should be careful about how they conduct their actions and who they trust in particular situations. This was an extremely unfortunate situation and my thoughts are with the families of both Rodriquez and Weir.
