review 1: I managed almost 3/4 of this book before calling it quits. The author is undeniably gifted, intelligent, and original in expression, but I simply couldn't get past the monotony of the revolving door of the main character's musings. I've read another book by this author which was quirky and strangely entertaining in it's twisted rendition of science fiction. However, trying to muddle through this book, which was devoid of science fiction, or a firm and developed plot was just too much. I've spent the last two days literally nodding off in my efforts to not abandon ship, but in the interests of keeping my sleep schedule undisturbed and my mind entertained/occupied, I have to move on. I can say that if long introspective narrations about random history and the mentally unbal... moreanced are your thing, then this is the book for you.
review 2: Big smoke. Small fry.In the following lines the narrating voice describes quite effectively how the book is written:"I wish I were a writer, a real writer, because if I were, I expect I wouldn’t be making such a goddamn mess of this story. Rambling, tripping over my own feet. I wish I were sane enough to always distinguish fact from fancy, but, like Caroline used to say, if wishes were horses, beggars would ride. Rosemary, she used to tell my grandmother… “Cut the crap and tell the story, Imp,” Imp typed. I typed. “Tell the story or don’t, but stop stalling. Stop procrastinating. It’s annoying.” It is. I know it is. I know it is. I know."I just wish this had been moved to page 1. Don't get me wrong, Kiernan can write quite well, I loved the way she connects the dots, and the richness of the tapestry. But it gets stuck somewhere in between literary and genre, but unlike, say, Gaiman, the result requires quite a commitment from the reader without the same level of payback. less

One of the strangest, creepiest books I have read. Disturbing on way, way too many levels...
