review 1: On occasion a book comes around that pulls me into it's world and it's characters so completely that I forget about the real world for a while. For me The Drowning Girl surpassed even that. It wasn't just a great novel, this was a gut-punch straight to my soul. I'm not sure if I have ever connected to a character the way I did with Imp. She's unique, and in my opinion the most compelling protagonist I have read in years. I'm not usually one for paranormal novels of any description but I picked this novel up at a whim and I'm so glad I did. I have now ordered two more novels by Kiernan and will definitely be checking out more work in this genre. If someone was looking for a recommendation I wouldn't really know what to say. It's not the plot or the setting which makes the b... moreook, even the prose, while beautiful are not the primary reason this book has elevated Kiernan as one of my personal favourites. It's the absolutely penetrating look into the mind of a person who looks at (and interacts with) the world from a different perspective. The moving depiction of humanity, with it's flaws and weaknesses, it's joys and triumphs and a heart warming romance that is atypical in fiction such as this.If you enjoy character driven stories you should definitely give this a try. It may just blow you away.
review 2: Normally I can push myself to finish a book but for some reason I cannot get my head wrapped around this one. Perhaps it's because of how repetitive Imp is, though I understand how she talks in circles. My problem is I try to remember parts where I think the information will come up again or even about important facts of Abalyn but because Imp talks in circles, I often find myself losing those facts I found intriguing or of some importance. less
