review 1: I grabbed this on my last library trip based on the author Caitlin Kiernan, who I know is a big Lovecraft fan and is often chosen for horror short story collections. The cover art is stunning and the inside art is quite good as well. I would say the story takes precedence here over the art--cover art is always more painterly and as such, more beautiful to me personally and the cover for this is particularly striking. The story is excellent--touches of Lovecraft, traditional horror and with a touch of fairy tale. I found the story really compelling and read it in one sitting. I hope to find more of this series in future visits to the book tombs.
review 2: I am generally not a big fan of Christian fanfic because, like HP Lovecraft fanfic, authors rarely demo... morenstrate the necessary restraint to creating a good story. They can't just tell a tale, they must cram in EVERYTHING even remotely related to the Christian mythos.This is different. There's a girl. She's got an angel. She's read the Bible. And she knows it's her duty to God to stab things. That's all you need. There's werewolves and other stuff, but it's only there to get stabbed.I don't know how to describe the art beyond:1.) It's good.2.) It conveys the punishing humidity of the southern United States.Do you enjoy girls stabbing things? Then you'll enjoy this. less
