review 1: First being said, I really wanted to like these. Really, really wanted too. The stories are very well researched and woven together beautifully. It's the dialog, character development, and style that killed it for me. These are supposed to be diary entries and are not in any way, except for saying Dear Diary at the beginning, written like diary entries. The only reason this set of stories got 3 stars instead of 2 was because the plot was interesting. The twists could have been fantastic. There was a lot that could have been good. Sadly, it wasn't though. Snow White Blood Red – This is told by the Evil Queen. Loved the idea of Snow White as a vampire. Very clever and fun. The pale white skin, the glass coffin – perfect. Something about the narrators dialog was off, sl... moreightly disjointed. I can’t put my finger on exactly how. I chalked it up to the author telling us at the beginning that we wouldn’t understand everything based solely on these stories. Great concept though. This story puts Snow White as the evil and the Evil Queen as, well… less evil. Ashes to Ashes and Cinder to Cinder - The continuity at the beginning got to me. A couple of missteps that threw me off track. The conversation doesn’t really flow. It feels like it was edited so much that the author forgot what was said and not said. I did enjoy the twist. Thought it was smart. Very well researched. Alice (Great Granddaughter of the Brother’s Grimm, not Alice from Wonderland as far as I know) has to travel into an immortals dreams to alter events. She is helped by a Dreamhunter named Loki. Beauty Never Dies – I get what everyone says about all the characters being the same here with this story. Pan of course, is the eternal kid. You expect him to be childish and flighty and “whatev” but it’s not only Peter Pan that has this personality – Dracula does too. And the Evil Queen actually says “whatev”. Once again, interesting twist. The stories, even though frustrating, are intriguing. Pan is determined to use Dracula to awaken his love. Ladle Rat Rotten Hut - First I have to say I LOVE Red Riding Hood. LOVE her. So I was nervous reading this. I can be overly critical with my Red. There were a few continuity errors at the start. Red comments on what her Mom’s response was to a certain thing and then later on says she never told her about it. Eh. It bothered me enough that I stopped reading and went back and checked (just like I did in Ashes to Ashes). The repetitiveness got on my nerves. Knock, knock, knock. Click, Click, Click, stomp, stomp, stomp, chirp, chirp, chirp. Everything was repeated again and again! Red Riding Hood has just turned 16 and she is inheriting her mother’s job out in the forest. Again, great twist but the writing killed it. Red is supposed to be 16 yet acts and talks like a stupid 7 year old. Again, same personality as Pan. Lots of starts and stops of telling the story so you would have to wait for the big reveal. And the love interest? Dumb. No spark, no anything. Just an “I like you” out of nowhere. Their dialog here was particularly cringe worthy.Mary Mary Quite Contrary – Didn’t enjoy this story at all. I understand that Mary Quite Contrary will be a major bad guy in the books, but this didn’t feel fairy tale enough to me. The devil finds a mirror that brings out the worst in everything. The mirror breaks into shards and gets in the eyes of mortals (Snow Queen retelling). The devil watches these people as a curiosity because he normally has control over the wicked. These particular people even scare him. Elizabeth Bath is included, as well as Peter Pan and a Pipi Longstocking rip off. Blood Apples – By this part of the book I was just reading really fast for it to end. Sorry to say. This was in the voice of Prince Charming. He enlists the help of Jack (from the beanstalk stories) to help him rescue Snow White from Rapunzel’s tower.
review 2: The Grimm Diaries Prequels by Cameron Jace are such a fun take on traditional fairy tales. I loved them! The first six stories are so exciting to read. I found myself smiling and wanting to keep reading faster and faster. The author has taken the fairy tale world and really made it his own with these unique twists on classics. I loved the writing style and the set-up for the stories. This was a fun set of novellas to read that I read quickly. I can't wait to read the others.
