The Carrie Diaries
review 1: Disappointing. The show does this book five times better. Carrie is whiny but I guess that's why it's a young adult book, after all. Perhaps if I had read this first and not the book, I would have appreciated the source material more. The show portrays Carrie is a woman who knows what she wants, smart, intelligent, fashionable, and also doesn't take crap from men, which honestly, doesn't even Sound like the Carrie we meet on Sex and the City. In a way, the show improves on the source content. Sebastian's character is painted as the typical rich guy that doesn't care about Carrie's feelings. He's so two dimensional in this version. Perhaps it's because this is Carrie's diary but the show made him into a Real person, sympathetic even, which I found hard to disentangle from w... morehile reading this novel. I kept waiting for Sebastian to be better and feel remorse and be kind, but he was none of those. He was a stand in for, I guess, future Mr. Big? Carrie's father in this comes across so heavy handed because he's a single father. He is very emotional but I feel the TV version works better in this case. Additionally, situations and people all mix matched (two sisters, three female best friends instead of two) were condensed for the show's purpose, but I found it hard to care about Lali (especially with her behavior) in this book. I think in this case, the show is significantly better than the book. I don't recommend this book to anyone.
review 2: This book is a real guilty pleasure of mine; I read it for the first time in one sitting long ago, it was so funny and catching that I couldn't put it down. Since then I've read it a few more times, and it never fails to amuse me. A must read for anyone who likes girly, quirky books such as Sex and the City, the 'Shopaholic' series by Sophie Kinsella, or Bridget Jones. Overall is a happy, lighthearted, warming read - I recommend for those days when you just want to stay at home, under the duvet with chocolate and endless hot drinks :) less
