review 1: YA romance building on the story of Brigadoon. Veronica and Mackenna travel to Scotland to take possession of an aunt's cottage and spend a nice summer pursuing Scots. They end up pursuing very old Scots, of course, in Doon, the village that can only be reached from our world once every hundred years. There's a lot in here, sometimes the world-building is a bit much and clearly a setup for a series. I knocked off a star because although I like a nice clean romance, there seems some unnecessary God and Destiny and Submission stuff towards the end. Plus our heroines are always standing around being fought for and our heroes seem likely to be extremely old for the heroines, despite their youthful appearance, according to the rules of the world. Plus, like in Twilight, t... morehe whole rules-of-romance-novel stuff gets on my Feminist nerves. But overall, the romance is romancey even if the setup (Veronica's lousy home life to which no one would want to return) makes all the choices the heroines make a bit too easy. Candy.
review 2: If I could give this book 3 1/2 stars I would. just rounded up, I feel this book was just okay. It had a fantastic premise but not fully executed. The middle was very boring. The beginning and end of the novel was great though. I feel it should have been 100 pages shorter than it was. Loved Veronica, Duncan and Mackenna but could care less about Jamie. I still will read the second novel because like I said, Veronica and Mackenna are great characters. less
