review 1: Gideon has promised to uphold his decree to defend Second Earth from the vicious death vampires intent on claiming it. He's a Militia Warrior, and needs to remain focused on the task at hand. Unfortunately, his mind keeps traveling to his ex-girlfriend, Elise. Their breaking up is still quite recent, and he's nursing the hurt in more ways than one. If he's to succeed in fighting the war against the other faction, he'll need to set aside his pain, and the incessant yearning roiling within him.An unexpected call from Elise soon turns his world topsy-turvy. Elise insists that danger is afoot, yet Gideon is reluctant to take her words at face value. After all, she left him not too long ago. When she reveals that she's been a clairvoyant for as long as she can remember, he soon... more realizes just how much she's held at bay from him. He can't help but to wonder as to what else she's kept from him.Discovering her secrets, however, will have to wait. His sister has been targeted, and it's up to him to make things right. Elise is now the key in their discovering the treachery that's coming their way. Sadly, time is of the essence.A chance decision soon changes life as they know it. The death vampires are on the march, and they're intent on destroying everything in their path. Gideon refuses to allow them the upper hand. The path to redemption is rocky, at best. Protecting Elise and his beloved family is of the utmost importance, and he'll make sure to succeed in that endeavor.I admit I've started the series on the third book. (I think?) I'll need to catch up on the first two, but I've got to admit that from what I've read, thus far, this is a beautifully crafted series. The love, the tension, the intrigue - they're just enough to keep my attention on the story itself. Action flows non-stop, and the romantic elements succeed in giving a deeper meaning to the decisions Gideon and Elise undertake. I look forward to catching up on this lovely series.
review 2: In the world of vampires and paranormal romance finding a world that is unique is hard to do, Caris Roane has managed to do that with Brink of Eternity and the The World of Ascension series. This is an in between novella #2.5 in this series. Gideon is a warrior first and foremost, he plans to devoting his life (eternal as it may be) to helping win the war within the vampire world. He has recently ended a two year affair he had been carrying on with a human, Elise.Elise had always had to hide her gift, she was taught at an early age that it was not something to be discussed and as an effort to keep control of her life and ignore her visions she is very ordered and very scheduled. When she receives a vision of Gideon's beloved sister being in danger she has to go against everything she thought she wanted in order to help save Rachel. The unique world that has been created in this series is well done and the mythology that has even been created as part of this world is good. I enjoyed the chemistry between Elise and Gideon, with this being an in between novella a lot of the back story of the two warring factions and even of the warriors themselves is missing. I would say on its own it is a good read and I liked it, I think if read as part of the series it would be even better.I received this book in exchange for my honest review. less
