review 1: Not a book about Dion per-se, but a dialectic about modern critical postures using her work as a sort of extreme control subject. Fascinating. Wilson's take on the last few centuries of popular music is refreshing and smart. His dissection of modern art criticism, primarily in music and even more wonderfully, his own, is remarkably honest and makes me, occasionally, look at my own prejudices and wince.Don't worry. He doesn't care if you like Celine Dion. He really doesn't either. But he does demand respect for the potential to.The best of this series that I've read.
review 2: I've read a few books in the 33 1/3 series. They're all slightly different, but they're all sort of the same -- except for this one.Carl Wilson writes about Celine Dion's career, fro... morem early age to now. He writes about fans that love her music, self-consciously or otherwise. He writes about what it means to like or dislike music, something that can be utterly personal or a mass-market commodity -- something that can connect you to huge masses or people, or set you apart from the crowd. And, Carl Wilson talks about "Let's Talk About Love", Dion's album that includes the Titanic song.I enjoyed this book, but too much of it seemed unnecessary to me. Clearly Dion has fans, and even if you've never met anyone that would admit to liking her music unironically, everyone must know they exist. Some of the discussion about the history of taste seemed to be all at once too much for a book of this sort, but not enough to really do justice to the topic.In the end, there were some parts of this book that I really enjoyed reading -- I just wish it was tightened up a little bit. less
