review 1: I started reading this book because I had heard of the Scofield Mine disaster and wanted to learn more. I found the book quite engaging. I became invested in the life of the main character and had a hard time putting the book down. It was interesting to read about life in a mining town in central Utah. I knew the book's climax was tragedy. Even so, I was in tears at that part. When I had finished, I turned to the internet to learn more about the real-life characters who populate the book.
review 2: Once again Carla Kelly has completely enthralled me with a story that I purposely stayed away from thinking I wouldn’t like it. “My Loving Vigil Keeping” hooked me from the first chapter through all 438 pages. It is historic fiction based on actual facts from t
... morehe Scofield Mine disaster on May 1, 1900 in Utah.Della Anders accepts a contract teaching position in the town of Winter Quarters, Utah. The town is populated with miners and their families from many different countries. Della is upbeat and friendly as she meets the people, but she is cautiously secretive about her own background. The name Anders is associated with great Utah wealth, but that is certainly not, and has not ever been part of her life. Della has struggled and survived a most difficult childhood and now she is out on her own. The wonderful people and children of Winter Quarters are there to turn her life into something special and meaningful. She in turn gives something special to all those people she meets and the children she teaches, including a young Welsh girl and her widowed father. The danger of a mine disaster is constantly hovering. How it affects every person in town is a difficult challenge. This story crept into my heart and sole for a few reasons. I am LDS so the church scenes and references were familiar. All that is a part of the lives of so many immigrants who left their homes to come to Zion so long ago. They did what they were good at – mining. These were good people doing their best for the good of their families. And for me personally, a whole line of my ancestors came from Wales and England; and even though this happened a quarter century before my dad was born, he is from that area in Utah, born and raised in Price.I loved this story and cannot think of a good reason to give it any less than 5 stars. (Except maybe I still don’t have a clue how you pronounce “Angharad”.)PS – Carla Kelly, if you read this (and I know sometimes you do) know that in chapter 17, when Della talks about the library and Miss Ordway as a refuge, that is absolutely true! As an elementary school librarian for 18+ years, I can state that I had many students that were constant visitors and willing helpers that loved coming in whenever. I loved that they DID come and felt safe and welcome. Now, it is a joy to see them as adults and have them remember… less
