review 1: synopsis:laura is the bastard child of a peer of the realm, and was auctioned off the highest bidder by her father. her husband wants an heir from her, and laura suffers his attention. when her husband becomes incapacitated after an apoplectic fit, laura is grateful, but resolves to give him the best care that she can. when her husband dies, laura is left aimless. she has previously found out that she has 3 half-sisters, so she goes to visit nana. when she arrives, nana is receiving bad news from philemon, her neighbour and a doctor. her husband has been injured, but is all right. before philemon leaves for his post in the naval hospital, he invites laura to come and help. laura doesn't plan to do so, but she does take a day trip to visit some of her brother-in-law's men. ... moreshe ends up saving the life of a man, and then falls in to working at the hospital. as she and philemon get to know one another, laura has to overcome her distaste for the married state because she loves him.what i liked: laura and philemon together. he was so understanding but demanding of her; he seemed to know what her threshold was and push her to it. when it stretched further, he would push further. i liked seeing nana and her captain again. i liked how philemon was so patient and understanding with laura with regards to her apprehension of marital relations, and even after they were married didn't insist that she come with him. i liked that laura got more and more self-worth and self-confidence as she dealt with everything at the hospital. i liked the surrounding characters, and that not everyone was painted with a sympathetic brush.what i didn't like: nothing.
review 2: The book was more heart driven than the first one. I had a lot of compassion of Laura and I felt that I could see her overcome her fears and be willing to trust the people she loved. As for Philemon, he was quite a fascinating person. He had an incredibly form of unconditional love for Laura and that was incredible. His life as a surgeon was not always good but I was glad that he finally had Laura to comfort him. I really enjoyed this book and this makes me even more excited to read the third and last novel. I just hope it's not as surprising as the last book I read. less
