review 1: In order for this to have ended up in my house someone, somewhere, must have recommended it to me, but I can’t imagine who, or why. The first third of it is absolutely abysmal; tediously dull and repellently preachy. If one were to pick this up expecting a regency romance (which the cover pretends to be) one would be seriously disappointed. Once I realized that this is instead a rather lightweight novel about nursing during the Napoleonic wars, then it almost moved up to OK. It didn’t have much in the way of characterization, but it did have lots and lots of juicy details about wound care and (lack of) cleanliness as well as a very heavy dose of anti-Napoleon British patriotism. But this novel’s final flaw was its author’s conviction that modern day romance re... moreaders need to be preached at about the fundamental decency of the middle class. Apparently we’re all suffering from princess-envy and need to be reminded of the down-to-earth value of the salt-of-the-earth. Gag me with a spoon!
review 2: “The Surgeon’s Lady” is #2 of a three sisters trilogy by author Carla Kelly. The first one I read took place behind enemy lines of the Napoleonic Wars. This one centers on the aftermath of the battles, namely injuries, death, gore, and how the military doctors cope with it all. The medical descriptions are pretty horrific at times but it certainly gave me another view of just how those wars transpired and the impact on the British soldiers. I liked the story very much! The Regency era characters had all the attributes of proper English formality, but the setting of the military hospital with all it’s awful happenings gave a new priority to priorities – namely that formality that “should” be so important, meant absolutely nothing when it came to saving lives. Compassion was top priority. I liked Dr. Brittle’s personality and attitude, and Laura’s willingness in doing her utmost to help – forget social class and propriety! What an awesome couple and big surprise – they just happen to fall in love!Reading this trilogy out of order is not a big deal. I didn’t know I was doing just that until well into my first book, which is actually #3. So I’m reading the trilogy backwards. Each one can stand alone, but I admit I am curious as to the last sister now… less

Story gets 4 stars very cute but R rated because of intimate details. Not for young girls.

If you're looking for a classic romance story with navy/medical setting, go for it.
