review 1: I stumbled upon this book in my public library's ebook section. Loved it! It is part of Carla Kelly's Channel Fleet Trilogy, and I immediately read the next two, one right after the other. For me it was a refreshing change from "the ton" of Regency romance. These stories focus on a naval captain, a naval surgeon, and a marine dealing with Napoleon in Portugal. Carla Kelly's writing was sweet, tender, and human as she tells of military men who never flinch from duty while deeply loving the women who deeply love them during a time of war and waiting. Wonderful characters. I will be reading more Carla Kelly!
review 2: 3.75 starsThis is the first book in this series, but the second one I read, and that may be why I didn't enjoy it as much as I expected. In the
... more third book in this series, MARRYING THE ROYAL MARINE, the relationship between the hero and heroine has such a slow, delicious (sweet and humorous) build that it was all I could do at night to put it down and get some sleep so I could go to work the next morning. This one was more of an "oh, yeah, there's a book I'm in the middle of that I should probably try to finish" type of apathy. It's not that it's poorly written or that the story isn't good---I just didn't enjoy it as much as the third book. less

2.5 stars. A little boring. Didn't quite get why everyone thought the heroine was so great.

Bra tänk med personer som inte rör sig i slott utan i mer modest miljö.

Not one of my favorite Carla Kelly books. Pretty predictable.
