review 1: Well written (in Spanish - can't vouch for the English version), creepy - as it should be - and complete in it's own right (as horror story). Some truly nauseating - and en-gross-ing details (the shower scene, the squirrels scene, the historical/Balkan description, etc). Perfect length - just over 100 pages. Yet, as many of the other reviews here attest, this can be read at other levels than merely a classic horror story: symbolic of our relationships (what do we really know of our spouses, our boss, our children? ), symbolic of society's (here Mexico's) corruption. There's a great scene at the end when the protagonist has to make a major decision. While vampire stories have been done before, this whole narrative is handled very elegantly and artfully. Indeed, the accompan... moreying drawings (in the Spanish version) add to the experience.
review 2: Este libro, al igual que Aura, me dejó con un extraño sabor de boca. Me envolvió y me invitó a imaginarme criaturas de la noche que distan de ser buenos, lo cual fue maravilloso. Al final, como siempre, me quedé con la boca abierta, pero se le agradece al autor, porque sus letras son- porque a pesar de él haber muerto, éstas siguen vivas- ligeras y profundas, con la capacidad de sumergirte en cualquer mundo que hayan creado, y esta vez crearon uno en donde Vlad ha llegado a México, en donde su historia, aunque es la misma, es diferente, cosa que hace al libro orginal y, por qué no decirlo, extraño, como sólo el querido Fuentes pudo lograr dentro de este género... less
