review 1: If you like reading you don't need a book about reading. If you don't like reading, this book either won't touch you or you won't pick it up.It is an easy reading with few articles about reading. We read because we like it regardless of the reading style each one have and effect of technology. Some stuff are better without analysis.I liked the variety of ideas. Some of the writers had rich stories to tell.
review 2: Feeling sluggish about reading? this book will remind you the importance of being immersed in the wonderfulness of the imagined world. With stories, essays from authors and related industries, Stop What You're Doing and Read This is a collection which spans from how one starts to read, how reading impacts his/her life to the science of reading. I fin
... mored it especially crucial to be reminded about how to read, to savor the choice of words, the pictures authors paint for readers, when modern technology has conditioned us to be impatient and just want to get to the end and know how the characters fare.Love the pieces by Zadie Smith, Tim Parks and Mark Haddon, in particular. They demonstrate reading doesn't discriminate, be it one's social status, interest or mood. But there are also a few pieces which are rather preachy. I've expected the book to be pro-reading from the start, but still there are some that are overly forceful in bringing the idea across, which I find rather annoying. I've already bought into the idea when I bought the book, no need to shove it down my throat. The book touches upon the advent of ebooks, with many expressing optimism that electronic versions won't spell the demise of books. I guess it's because the group gathered here are all mostly authors, who will still get a share of the profit, no matter the book purchased is a physical copy or not. But throw in an owner of a indie bookstore, and we will probably get a different viewpoint. As with any good books, this book makes you want to read more. less
