review 2: A veritable tome of a book, with more than 100 pages of data appendices and references. It packs a lot of authority and will be influential for years to to come but most readers can easily skip more than two-thirds of the book - the first four sections - without missing much and without losing the crux of the message. Financial crises in the shape of sovereign default, domestic debt default, banking crisis, currency crashes and inflation have happened with alarming frequency and regularity in both the now-developed countries in their earlier stage of development and of course on emerging countries. However, before each crisis, policy makers and the financial experts have been lulled into believing that crisis can not happen again, not this time and not in this country, because lessons have been learnt from the past mistakes and the financial system is more robust thanks to it. They point to innovations that have taken place and new regulations that have been put in place since the last crisis as evidence that such crisis cannot happen again and take comfort by telling themselves "this time is different." But time and again, history has shown such pronouncements to be wrong. The experts may be right in a narrow sense that crisis may not happen for the same reason but that hardly is important. An important book on history of financial crisis and short-lived memory of humans such that we are doomed to repeat the same mistakes. less
