review 1: May Rose lives on the mountain with his husband in a timber town. When he leaves her she goes downtown where he finds Wanda, her husband's daugheter with another woman. She is so good that she takes her under her protection. All the book deals with her daily life, how hard she works and how good she is. In fact, nothing happens in the book, the characters are shallow, and it is sooooo boring. I think I had not read such a bad book in a very long time. I regret finishing it and losing my time. However, I must give credit to the author because he managed to write almost 300 pages of nothing.
review 2: Young and in love, Rose May followed her husband Jamie to the Appalachian Mountains at the end of the 19th century where he worked in a logging camp and she was lef
... moret on her own to eek out a lonely, hard scrabble existence as she waited each week for the train to bring him home for the weekend. Early on, he came home to her. Later on he didn't. Rose May's already tenuous life is turned upside down when she learns Jamie has killed a man and she is accused of standing naked to entice the men passing by on the train. In The Girl on the Mountain, author Carol Ervin has created a vivid landscape of characters, the Appalachian Mountains, and life in and around the logging camps. This story doesn't rest on famous people or well known events. Instead it relies on characters so well developed, language so precise and fresh, and a plot so engaging you can't help but be drawn in.The story is enriched with historical detail. Each detail takes readers deeper into the time and place. None of the details is extraneous.I highly recommend this novel. One would never guess it was Ervin's first. less
