review 1: This book should have been perfect for me. It has all the elements that I love about a historical mystery and I was intrigued by the change in point-of-view. It's usually the gentleman detective and his wife in these sorts of books and I looked forward to India's perspective. She was just too much for me. Definitely clever and definitely insightful, but I felt like I was bashed over the head with the fact she runs a brothel. Every quip, every aside. It just pushed me out of the story a bit too often.
review 2: Entertaining. 3.75 Stars. I am a former avid historical romance reader. Regency period preferably. Recently I began reading cozy mysteries and historical romance mysteries and came across this series. The book is less historical romance but more espiona... morege and intrigue with a possible nuance to potential romance. The espionage plot was a little convoluted sadly I began to skim that portion. I like India. Another reviewer described her as feisty and irreverent. Check and check. A strong gusty woman. No simpering miss with hidden intellect. No waiting for that elusive rake to change his ways or recognize the hidden diamond in the rough. I appreciated India's descriptive narration and amusing dialogue "So don't get greedy, mate. Remember pigs get fat and hogs get slaughtered." The ancillary characters added to the story and were not overly annoying. I am interested to see how the series develops. Whether there is a true romance element. less
