review 1: Another great Kathy Mallory mystery, set in NYC, police procedural with fascinating characters. When I reach the end of the series (or maybe sooner, since O'Connell is still writing) I will go back to Mallory's Oracle and re-read the entire series, since I find them so enjoyable. This mystery is about a series of murders/attempted murders where the victim has eyes, nose, ears sealed, is tied into a sack and hoisted into a tree in Central Park and left to die. There are several threads- not all relating to the murders (Mallory's recent psych evaluation, political/police intrigue, Mallory's relationships with her father's circle of friends). And in the midst of a really tragic story, there are occasional snippets of hilarity.
review 2: What a rich cast of tho
... moreroughly unlikeable characters - and the children are just plain terrifying! O'Connell really manages to capture the dark and sinister side of humanity ... I can't say I loved this book, but I was however captivated by it and had to find out what happened in the end. It was enough to give anyone nightmares! I'm not usually faint hearted and can stomach a fair bit of graphic violence when it comes to crime novels - but found the brutality in this novel, especially committed by children, a bit hard to stomach. less
