review 1: I am really very fond of Carole Cummings' intensely character-focused style. It and I are muy simpatico. :-) I am not as invested in this plot or this world as I was with her Wolf's-Own series, and I am still intensely irritated at the way she fails to include a complete story arc in any one of her book installments -- these are really three fragments of one serialized novel rather than three novels in a series -- but I can forgive a lot of gripes for the sake of her character work. I also find the extensive similarities between Wil and Jacin (from Wolf's-Own) to be very very interesting. Cummings obviously has a lot invested in this type of character, and I just wonder if her next book will include another of the same type. It's okay with me if it does -- I've enjoyed rea... moreding both characters -- but it's interesting to see such a distinct character type repeated across two series.
review 2: In this second book of the series, Wil and Dallin are unsure where they can go for protection. Dallin believes that if they return to Putnam, the Constabulary can protect them even if it may mean war. As Wil and Dallin travel and attempt to outpace both the Guild and the Bethren that are chasing them, Wil and Dallin begin to share dreams and both Wil's powers as Dreamer and Dallin's powers as Guardian manifest and grow. Wil is still terrified of the Guild who has kept him prisoner for decades. Can he put his trust in the Guardian to protect him? What is he supposed to believe? The tales that he grew up with for decades? Or the promises of a man he just met? If it comes down to it, will he choose himself over the Guardian? As Wil and Dallin travel together, their wary truce morphs into trust and friendship and even more. Wil finally recognizes that Dallin's inner strength and strength of character match his outward physical strength and Wil finally learns to trust after decades of betrayal and fear. But will the Guardian be enough to protect Wil against the magic-user that is chasing him? What will they do when they discover that political corruption is nearly everywhere? This plot was pretty exciting and I enjoyed the action/adventure feel to the book.I enjoyed this book as much as the first book, but even more so because I'm starting to fall in love Dallin and Wil. This book also ended a little abruptly and I'm happy the third book will be out in a week. less
