review 1: Okay. Let me be honest. I was in the mood for something along the lines of a quick read with lots of smut. I saw this book by Carole Cummings and I thought oh hey, fantasy and smut together my favorite!! So while I didn't quite get all the smut I wanted oh man did I get the fantasy. This book... no exaggeration is seriously a joy to read. The world captivates you. But more importantly the characters captivate you. I truly think that these characters come to life so vividly that you won't want to put the book down. The point of view switches from the majority of her characters at one point or another so you get all of their great perspectives. Don't let that stop you from reading this. I know some people only like books that focus on one person and don't like when it cuts a... moreway to another persons story. And while this book does do that sometimes when it cuts away it usually is always about the main character and is ALWAYS pertinent to the story. Whether as background information on the characters or as a way to let the reader just understand what is coming from the other side. Oh my goodness, I definitely can't forget to mention the use of literary devices. It was simply superb. Anthropomorphism, allegories, alliteration, analogies, paradoxes, metaphors, juxtaposition, imagery, caesuras, seriously I could go on forever!!! This was a literary work of art as far as I'm concerned. I seriously was SOOO pleasantly surprised and happy that this wasn't a quick cheap smutty book ( don't get me wrong those are good every now and again) it's just that this book was soo soo much more. It gave you things to think about. In some places in the world there are similar circumstances I know it's fictional but the thing about fantasy I like is that I always find that there is some reality in it. I'm not talking about dystopian or anything like that just fantasy with realistic characters I suppose? Or realistic circumstances like status or what not. And this book is just so epically realistic in Its' fantasy that it makes you think ,man that is deep. Sometimes I thought it reminded me of the book The God Eaters by Jesse Hajicek just like the feel of the atmosphere in some parts. Idk also Some parts were kinda slow or dense but like I said this isn't a quickie. You could possibly devour it like one if you can't put it down like in my case lol. Idk this is all in my humble opinion it's always best to form your own so if you think you are a BL fantasy lover then you should read this book. Fantastic characters, great plot, good writing... What more can you ask for?
review 2: I'm almost tempted to snap one more star because this isn't a novel, it's a serial, a friggin' 390 page exposition. That is not to say it's not quite good. There is some action, decent world building, a character with an awesome right hook and a mix of Chinese-like calendar gods and minor/fallen gods, mixed with racism, prophecy, a decent romantic subplot and the BATTLE-THAT-SHALL-SETTLE-ALL is going to happen on the tonight of the the day the book ended. How could you? less
