review 1: This book was not what I expected; it is a heartbreaking tale that leaves the cruel realities of life exposed. Although I was familiar with the author and her glorious storytelling abilities, I thought I was going to read a slightly dark retelling of the Cinderella Fairytale, not so at all, this was way darker. I did not anticipate that the book would move me the way it did. The last page of the book left me reeling; I had so many questions! The glittery fairytale had suddenly taken an unexpected turn and I had to re-envision the whole story; after doing so everything fit, the story made more sense to me. All in all I have to say that I searched for the kind of magic that really rights wrongs but instead I got a glimpse of what it may have been like to live inside the mi... morend of my grandmother when she battled dementia. Its a Turgeon story! Twisted and bittersweet, I should have known better than to expect a Disney-like ending. I have learned my lesson, in the near future, when I read a new Turgeon book I will approach it without expectations or pre-conceived notions; after all what Turgeon does best is turn all of those old stories we thought we knew so well into something new.
review 2: This book was a severe let down. It started off really well - a fairy godmother, cast out because she falls in love with the prince, instead of Cinderella. Awesome. The story keeps up some mystery as to how things will turn out between the Godmother and the prince, as well as how things are going in her new life in New York City. She starts to see fairies and believes if she can right the wrong, unite a new Cinderella with a new prince, that she will get to return home. And then you find out it was all in her head and she's just a delusional old lady.WHAT?Okay, interesting twist, I guess, but it wasn't even done well! You get to the end where she's starting to hallucinate about fairy wings and feathers...And then you find out it's all a suppressed memory, instead of Cinderella, it's her sister who was murdered...somehow? The author becomes vague about this...which is great as that's how the old lady remembers it, but isn't so hot for the reader who has been strung along this whole time and would like things laid out. It was like the author got tired of writing and was like...oh yeah, it was all a hallucination, it was her sister who was murdered, while she went to a party or something and...whatever, I'm done writing.Oh, and then she kills herself. We think. Can't be sure.Like I said, author seems to have just gotten tired of writing and was like...hmmm, you know, I've left everything vague and mysterious up till now, so why not just leave our old lady hanging...literally. Like off the dock.So disappointed. Such awesome potential...all to waste. less
