review 1: After being to put it mildly underwhelmed by the first book in Carsten Stroud's Niceville Trilogy i am sure many of you are asking "why read the second one?" Well i suppose it was a case of morbid facination as to if things have improved and for the most part things have. For a start the story centers mostly on Rainey Teague and unlike before we don't have the seemingly unlimited side stories that plagued Niceville.Rainey is completely different from the innocent lad who disappeared without a trace only to be found in a crypt. Something has a control of him that wan't him free of his adoptive parents Nick and Kate and to carry on the evil ways of his male ancestors Abel and London Teague. With the help of local friend Lemon the family tries to find out about Rainey's famil... morey line that reveals rape torture and murder and a family feud that refuses to stop well after those involved have died. For Nick a local cop who has his hands full trying to catch someone who has stole money from local banks the stress will cause much trouble at home with the boy the center of it all.Overall The Homecoming was thankfully a better read than book one in the series but still managed to disappoint at times. Firstly the mysterious death of the Chinese nationals is never explained with only a brief menchin of it at the start, while the secret of the mirror was not explored. Things i hope will be tied up in the final chapter. My biggest problem is that despite this being a good read i can't recommend because the first book was just to confusing but without it the whole story wont make any sense at all. On it's own it is intriguing, action filled and a definite page turner but as a series it's only so so.
review 2: Niceville really isn't very nice. Nothing lives there and is trying to recreate itself. In the past, it manifested in the Teague line of men and now Rainey Teague is just about ripe for the picking. Kate and Nick Kavanaugh are Rainey's guardians now that his patents are dead and Kate's sister has finally left her abusive ex-FBI agent husband and is living with the. Rainey and Axel have bee missing a lot of school, hanging out at Patton's Head where the ghosts live. Lemon Littefeather, a Mayaimi Indian can see the ghosts and he knows Nothing is coming back to Niceville. Who will be consumed? Creepy in a very entertaining way; I plan to read the first book in the trilogy and look forward to the conclusion of the scary trip. less
