review 1: Deadshifted is officially the reason I will never go on a cruise. It’s not that I needed much urging in the form of the mass hysteria and carnage to sway me in this decision, it’s the thought of being stuck on a ship for days with no escape. Ok, no wait – Deadshifted hammers that home too. When Deadshifted opens, it’s some months after Edie’s last adventure. At the end of that last book, she found Asher, her shapeshifter friend again and when this book opens, she and Asher have been in a relationship, she’s pregnant, and they’re engaged. Given that all that happens within the first 10 or so chapters of the book, I knew Edie wasn’t going to be in for a happy ending. I’ve been following the series since book one, and through it all and Edie’s love interes... morets, I’ve always had a soft spot for Asher, the underdog (so to speak in her love life). I felt a little bit cheated that we didn’t get to see the honeymoon period for these two, I have to confess, even more so because the ending is a punch to the gut. So, Edie and Asher are on a holiday, celebrating being alive and together. Unfortunately, once they board the cruise ship, Asher sees someone from his past, someone he admits to Edie that he once helped in some unsavoury things, even though he may have gone back and made amends in his own way. She believes him, she loves him… but she’s also thinking twice about the man he is now, and for a part of the book at least, she wonders about the man he was, and whether she can live with his past. Asher is trying to live in the present. He wants to be a better man, but he can’t exactly ignore his past either. There’s no easy middle ground here. Edie is the type of character that will go headlong into danger, pregnant and all, to save someone, so she won’t always be okay with his past, but she’s trying herself. Love is complicated and messy, and comes with immense baggage for Edie, and as much as I want her to have her happy ending, it wouldn’t be half as satisfying if it wasn’t like this. Parallel to Edie and Asher’s complicated relationship and their attempts to get off a ship that is becoming quickly littered with bodies, is Claire and Hal. They’re an old married couple, fiercely devoted to one another, and Claire, like Asher is a supernatural creature – you’ll have to read to find out what she is exactly, but I will say one of the best things about this series, is the sheer imagination Cassie Alexander brings to her books and her supernatural creatures. Hal understands who and what Claire is, and has accepted it for the decades of their marriage. I can’t imagine it would have been easy, but Edie gets to see it’s doable, even if they do have a tragic end. The ending, I’m still digesting. To survive and to ensure their child survives, Edie is given vampire blood – not Anna’s, unfortunately, but she’s not beholden to a vampire, Raven, until her baby is born. One thing I’ve always loved about Edie is that she’s a normal human caught up in a supernatural world and holding her own. But things have to change, and a child changes everything. What wouldn’t you do for your child? Or your chance at a family?
review 2: When I saw the cover of this book, I thought it was going to be one of those awful "punny" titled books. You know, the ones with titles like "Knot Funny: a Macramé Mystery". Then, when I got further into it, it seemed to be turning into one of those erotic books disguised as a romance. Well, I was wrong on both counts, but I'm still not sure I liked it. Turns out it's the fourth book in a series, so there was a lot of background to surmise, and it was confusing in parts. The story line turned a little dark, as nearly everybody dies, and the ending really leaves you hanging. I may have to read the next one just to see what happens. Or not. less
