review 1: This is a very short novel – but I enjoyed reading it and I became instantly involved with the characters. So, the character development must have been great – although most often I realize that on my own without having to deduce it. Not sure what that suggests. Another thing, I usually enjoy novels with a little more history woven in but I seemed not to miss it in this novel. I read in another review that he/she never got the sense of time while reading the book and I feel the same way. I even was sort of surprised when I went back to the beginning after I had read it and found that it started in the 1970’s. Mentally I had made it more modern that that – but of course, by the end it was and maybe that was what I was remembering. I had never thought of recom... moremending it to either of my book discussion clubs until I saw that recommendation on line. I will think it over some more. One other thing – I never guessed the relationship of Blanche and her sperm giver. (Sperm giver is my attempt to refrain from making a “spoiler” remark)Here’s the story line in case I have trouble recalling it later: Ora is apparently well off during the period of the novel and thinks she has a good relationship with her black maid (Blanche). She lies about something and this bother her immensely and this guilt plays a big part of the plot through the rest of the book. During the book she comes to realize that she has unintentionally made things difficult for black Blanche and her children.
review 2: I just finished reading this book for my book club, and I enjoyed the characters and plot. Although the setting was in Florida, it felt more like Georgia to me, and I am very well acquainted with both. So, I felt very much at home in Mayville, and also felt like I'd met these characters somewhere before: in The Help, To Kill a Mockingbird, and The Secret Life of Bees. I've been touched by all of those novels; and this one affected me, too, though not on quite as grand a scale. There were moments that made me cry for the sheer sympathy these characters deserved, and there were moments that made me laugh aloud as I recognized some sort of familiarity in the characters and their actions. The twists in plot were enough to make me catch my breath and even exclaim out loud in shock. I was drawn in my Ora's narration, and truly felt like I was sitting on her porch with her listening to this story of a decades-long secret that weighed so heavily on her heart. And I was drawn, too, by the family she created for herself in Eddie, Blanche, the kids, and other friends. I can't wait to discuss this with my friends at book club! less
