The Ghost of Molly Holt by Amy Cross

Rating: 2.5 Stars

Bright morning sunlight streams down through gaps in the forest canopy, as two cars rumble closer along the dirt road.

Plot

When three teenagers set out to explore an abandoned house in the middle of a forest, they think they’ve found the location where the infamous Molly Holt video was filmed.

They’ve found much more than that…

Review

Tim follows his friend Freddie to an abandoned house because he is convinced that is the house were the Molly Holt video was shot. Molly Holt was kidnapped, tortured and the video of her torture and death then put on the internet for all to see.

Tim does not believe in ghosts. He’s mostly there to impress Becky, a girl he has a crush on. But when they watch the torture video in the same basement Molly was killed, they unleash her vengeance on them.

To be quite honest, the book is very, very predictable. It reads like a classic horror film. The characters don’t gain much depth throughout the book. There are a lot of repetitions and the conversations between characters are a bit flat.

“What were you doing in the basement?” she asks again. “I called out to you, but you didn’t answer.”

“I wasn’t in the basement.”

“I heard you.”

“I really – ”

“I heard you Tim,” she adds, as she turns away and closes her eyes. “I heard you.”

And yet… it is still creepy. The author creates a great atmosphere. It had me on the edge of my seat for a while there and despite its weaknesses, it was very enjoyable.

Conclusion

A story that will be familiar to anyone who has ever seen a horror movie, but it works for the most part.
