Stirring, dreamlike and gorgeously shot, Before I Fall is one of 2017’s hidden gems.
“One good thing, just follow one good thing and see where it leads you.”
Groundhog Day’s melodramatic teenage daughter is really good! Without context it’s a little corny (really hammering home that Be. Nice. To. People. message) but in the moment everything clicks. And once you’re on board you’ll ride that wave of optimism and emotion through to its rapturous conclusion.
It’s also beautifully shot. Ry Russo-Young & Michael Fimoganri make a formidable directorial-DP pair, amplifying the haunting mood of the piece by drowning it in ghostly greys and striking imagery. Dew drops trickling from trees and car windows. A life and death chase through a dimly lit forest. A montage portrayed as a literal outer-body experience. This boasts some of the best framing & cinematography of 2017 – and a soul-stirring score to go with it.

Didn’t see this one coming tbh.
