review 1: This did not fail to disappoint. Was amazed to read one or two negative reviews. Clearly such reviewers either need a humour transplant or else should go off and read something `academically weighty' that's been nominated for the Booker Prize. A Rural Affair is romantic chick lit in all its wonderful easy-read glory with lashings of clever humour. Poppy Shilling is abruptly widowed and left with two small children. Shocked but not shattered - hubby was a nerdy loveless bore after all - she carries on heroically until a knock on her door changes all her pre-conceptions about hubby being a nerdy loveless bore. Poppy plunges into deep depression which, whilst no laughing matter, is told with wonderful irony and behind-hand-naughty-giggles. The reader goes on a journey with Po... moreppy, through friendships, recovery and finding new love. A fabulous feel-good read with Alliott in fine form.
review 2: I'm not a huge fan of chick lit usually, I can only really enjoy it if its not cheesy and its well written. This book however, was brilliant! It had me laughing, cringing and feeling every emotion that Poppy, the main character, felt. It's starts off with Poppy imaging ways of her boring husband dropping dead, to her arriving home to policemen at the door to let her know her husband had been killed (in a very comical way, I might add). You follow her life through the months after his death which reveal things aren't what she always thought they were. It was a very good read and as I mentioned had me laughing out loud (very embarrassing whilst sat alone in a M&S cafe!) less
