review 1: Book about a woman called Poppy Shilling who loses her husband in an accident. She'd mentally imagined ways of killing him off many times but it was still a shock when it happened. I enjoyed getting to know Poppy and her three friends, her neighbour Jennie, divorced Angie and chain-smoking Peggy! I also enjoyed their new book club! I liked the developing romances in the book and wasn't sure which man Poppy would eventually end up with, Sam her solicitor or Luke the church organist of her choir. A great story, a large chunk of which includes a village 'hunt'. Not everyone's cup of tea, especially the unfortunate incident which Poppy caused! I really enjoyed this book and rate it 4 stars simply because it didn't hold my attention as many others do. I kept putting it ... moredown and picking it up a chapter at a time. Not as gripping a story as I would have liked but a pleasurable bit if escapism nonetheless.
review 2: I wanted to like this book, but overall it was just an OK read. The story line seemed to drag on and on and nothing really ever happened. There were so many smaller characters to keep track of and many of them came off as boring or pretentious. I kept getting the feeling as I was reading that something major would happen, like the pivotal moment in Gone Girl, but it never materialized. It was just all right and in fact, picking it up to finish reading it felt like a chore much of the time. less
