When Women Were Warriors
review 1: This is Book 2 of the Series, "When Women Were Warriors". In this book, we follow Tamras, as she works as Companion to her warrior, Maara. Unlike many of the other warriors, Maara is training Tamras to use different weapons than the sword, which is what the other companions are learning.Tamras begins to explore more aspects of her life in this book, and Sparrow, another Companion, becomes her lover. Maara has been adopted by another strong woman in the house, which ties her to the House of Merin, and makes her life easier. Because her original parentage is unknown, other Warriors have been questioning her loyalty and trying to block her ability to move up in prestige. Now with Namet as her mother and protector, Maara's status in the house is secured, and with it, Tamras' ... moreas well.Lady Merin and Tamras have difficulty understanding each other, which causes pain for both of them. The writer skillfully uses this conflict to help us watch and understand Tamras' growth and development as a woman and as a warrior. When Maara begins to have real problems with other warriors in the house, and raiders begin to threaten the security of their lands, Tamras has to decide where her loyalties really lie. This is definitely a 'middle-of-the-series' book, and at times feels a little slow. But I was carried once again by the strong writing, and the way that the author uses "show, don't tell" dialogue to both tell the backstories that emerge and carry the plot forward. By the end, I immediately picked up Book 3 -- now anxious to find out the destiny of Tamras as well as Maara, and how the House of Merin might figure in the rest of their lives.
review 2: So very good, like the first of the series. The story unravels in such a beautiful, simplistic manner that, despite your complete immersion, you almost don't realize how moving it is. What I love about the books is not only the tale, but the bits of honest truth and clear wisdom that I find particularly meaningful. It makes a good book a great book. Still, not a fan of the girl on girl action. It's not the scenes are done distastefully -- rather, they are very artistically crafted and are focused on love and connection rather than erotica -- but I just can't get into it in a way that it is moving to me. The lesbian action was heavier in this book than the first and I didn't find the story quite as compelling. I noticed the first book took me a day to read; this one took several. Length of read (for me with fiction) is a strong indicator of truly how well I liked it. Therefore, while the 1st book received 5 stars, this one receives only 4. I'd give it a 4.4 if I could. Sorry, Catherine. less
