review 1: Words fail me now as I try to put forth how the words wielded by Ms. Catherine M. Wilson had touched my heart. I think I have always love books because I love the characters that demonstrate to us strength and selflessness and love and kindness through the words they say and the actions they choose. I love the plot that allow me to immerse myself completely in it, taking me along every crest and trough, sending me to the darkest abyss of despair only to resurrect the brightest hope again, from the ashes of doubt, hope and happiness is rekindled until it burned brighter than ever. I just feel so fortunate that I should be able to find and tag along on this amazing journey. The love is a bit unconventional, but as Wilson weave all these characters' threads of life together to... more form bonds that will last forever, I began to realize that I have never before felt the love between the characters as strong as this. I'm not sure what called to me exactly as I was reading, but the way they expressed themselves through their words and their choices, and the way their emotions built up when "life asks them the question" made this book one powerful read. I love the wisdom Wilson conveyed, especially as they are the things my mother has taught me. To control my anger so that it can be worked to my benefit instead of letting it cloud my eyes and make me do rash actions, for instance.I would seriously recommend this book to everyone, especially women, so that as we follow Tamras on her journey, we may learn something ourselves as well.
review 2: This is a staggeringly good conclusion to a superb trilogy. The three parts of “When Women Were Warriors” are crafted to each work separately in chronicling a particular theme and narrative, while blending together overall to tell a seamless story of heroism and growth. If the first book was about loneliness, and the second book was about the journey away from civilisation, then this third part is the story of Tamras' return, filled with the understandings the wilderness has gifted her. Themes and symbols that we have sighted across the entire story return to gain new meanings and act in new ways. The stories within stories continue, highlighting themes in miniature. Interesting is Wilson's use of telling and retelling a single story to new audiences of characters; the subjectivity this invokes (some characters find more meaning in some sections of her story than others) highlights the broad use a single narrative can find. This is an excellent conclusion to the arc, and difficult to describe. I would highly recommend you read them yourself. less
