review 1: Ernest, the moose who doesn’t fit.Catherine RaynerThis refreshing children’s book by Catherine Rayner is unlike any other book I have read and I find the concept of Ernest’s struggle to fit in the book of great interest. I feel it is an unusual approach to a children’s story, but welcome the modern thinking behind it.Rayners choice of language is simple yet effective, and the physical aspect of the language is appealing too, with certain words enlarged, making them stand out. Such words, like, ‘shimmy’, ‘shuffle’ and ‘squeeze’ could provide an excellent resource for aiding young children in learning phonics.The illustrations are also simple and effective, and complement the story very well. The theme of not fitting in within the book, both physically an... mored socially could provide an excellent topic for a class discussion or circle time: everyone is different, yet we are all equal. I feel this positive message, along with another: keep trying and you will succeed’, could be thought provoking for children, and install important morals and values.I believe children in early years and year 1 and 2 would share my excitement in such a pleasant story, and would enjoy the various classroom activities that could be incorporated with the reading.
review 2: I must have been in a grumpy mood the first time I read this book. At the time, it didn't appeal to me, maybe because I was tired of fold out pages and how quickly they get ripped when part of a library collection.Upon re-reading, I find that I very much like this title. The language is fantastic and the illustrations are charming. I'm looking forward to sharing it with my storytime families. less
