review 1: This novel was a refreshing change to the normal christian historical fiction genre. It explored a very poignantly sad period of America's history, but without making the tone of the novel dark and foreboding. It was really very beautiful. I loved the way Richmond was able to weave the growth of the main character into the story instead of making it a cheesy Christian turn-around in the last few chapters. I give it four stars.
review 2: Books about missionaries aren't my go-to genre, but this one is by my friend Marcie's mom, so I picked it up for the personal connection. I also loved the two main characters, and their sweet love story reminded me of both "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" and one of my childhood favorites "Mrs. Mike." Definitely recommended if you enjoy historical fiction--great work, Mrs. Richmond! :) less
