review 1: The two daughters and mother Weissmann end up at Cousin Lou's cottage in Westport. They all lose everything that they own. So from a beautiful appartment across from Central Park, they move to a run down cottage in Westport. Each female Weissmann has loved a man who has left them for another woman. Betty, who is the mother, is still in love with her husband of 49 years, Joseph. Joseph is convinced that he now loves his assistant, Felicity, but there are strong good memories of his wife Betty. Annie likes Frederick, who is an author, but his daughter and son do not like Annie. Miranda's life was saved by a young actor, Kit, who she falls in love with his adorable 2 year old son, Henry. Kit leaves Miranda because he suddenly gets a part in a film and flies to Los Ang... moreeles. The books gets depressing for a while because the women feel sorry for themselves. I hope they wake up and smell the roses that they have to take care of themselves instead of depending on a man. This book kind of drags on about the unfairness of it all of being a female. The women are taking a while to fight back. Not my idea of a cheerful book.
review 2: "Jane Austen’s beloved Sense and Sensibility has moved to Westport, Connecticut, in this enchanting modern-day homage to the classic novel When Joseph Weissmann divorced his wife, he was seventy eight years old and she was seventy-five . . . He said the words “Irreconcilable differences,” and saw real confusion in his wife’s eyes. “Irreconcilable differences?” she said. “Of course there are irreconcilable differences. What on earth does that have to do with divorce?” Thus begins The Three Weissmanns of Westport, a sparkling contemporary adaptation of Sense and Sensibility" Well it sounds good but it is really slow moving. I ended up skimming and scanning the book to get to the end. A little tedious to read. Wish I could give it 2.5 stars. I guess if you really like Jane Austen....... less
