review 1: I really enjoyed this, especially since owning some and getting the rest from the library, I have the whole series!! Yay. I loved Fiona (I am a sucker for a Scottish Lass) and also liked Holburn, so off to a good start. This was a pretty unique story and there was some mystery, although a lot of murders seem to have been unpunished. I hadn't read a Maxwell book in awhile though I have many on my shelves. It is good to have a summer project to try and clear these shelves by reading the series' one after another! On to #2!
review 2: Fiona Lachlan grew up in the Good Society of Scotland. But reversals in her family standing caused her to move to London and seek her fortune. She's trying to stay off the streets, and is encouraging her friend Grace to do the same, b
... moreut she's getting pretty desperate. Her last job ended and she doesn't have anything to eat and is in danger of being thrown out of her apartment.Enter the Duke of Holburn, Dominic (Nick) Lynsted. Well, sort of. Fiona agrees to help poison (not to death, just a stomach ailment to punish him for dumping his former paramour) a man, but the Duke shows up instead. Of course, (this is a romance novel people) Fiona has seen him before, from afar, at a party and has wondered about him ever since. He, unsurprisingly, does not remember her (at least at first). When Irish men break into the inn where the two are meeting, Fiona takes advantage of Nick's being shot and decides to try and ransom him. Well, he slips loose just in time for them to escape from the Irish men once again. While they're on the run and trying to figure out who is trying to kill them (is it an old frenemy of Nick's? Perhaps the uncles who feel like they should have gotten the dukedom, not some actress' child? Or even his own mother who will receive a pretty inheritance on his death?), Nick has Fiona pose as his ward. She agrees since hanging out with a rich dude is better than going hungry. Love ensues... less

Despite the title, this is not really a Christmas story. There's hardly any mention of Christmas.

Pretty good for a Christmas-themed story. Not too heavy on the sugar plums, thank God.
