review 1: It's a great story, but I kept being annoyed at Lan. He (she?) seemed a bit too self-aware and sure of what he wanted. I find it hard to imagine that a teenage transvestite can feel 100% sure of who he is, especially considering those were not the modern times... I suppose that I just wanted more internal struggles and more unresolved sexual tension. They were all too confident. A lot of periods when they didn't see each other and then unexpected moments of complete lust and devotion. As a fairy tale (because it didn't seem very historically acurate)it makes an exciting read, but I simply couldn't empathize with the main characters.
review 2: Wu-Min has sent his not-so-beloved sister to Hui Wei, a minor official in China as a peace offering. Hui suspects this gi
... moreft immediately as some sort or trick or trap and refuses to even gaze upon her until a month after she arrives. But when he does, he falls in love with Lan'xiu. But Lan is horrible frightened and it doesn't take long for Hui to realize why. Lan is a male! and awaiting certain death. But Hui doesn't kill him- instead keeping him as a concubine. Lan must face the threat of the psychotic second wife and hopes to eventually avenge the death of his mother (because you see, when Wu-Min found out Lan was a boy, he killed her- that's not really a spoiler, so don't worry), all while trying to balance his love with Hui and gain his freedom.I loved the plot and premise of this book! It was skillfully done and I didn't hate the multiple-wives thing like I might have otherwise. It's one thing for all parties to willingly be involved with one person, another to be married as tribute and deal with jealousy. But again! don't worry, this book was NOT painful nor heart-wrenching to read. It was a pretty easy read. I will say however, that it was pretty obvious the author didn't do a huge amount of research into ancient China. Yes, she threw in some things, but I feel like she only scratched the surface. Particularly on the subject of clothing. She repeatedly said "trousers," and I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure men did NOT wear pants. They wore a long, simple-cut dress(for lack of a better word), I believe. Also, I didn't like that the author switched between "he" and "she" for the main character. In dialogue- fine. That's cute. But in simple narration and text, I didn't like it. Just pick one. But enough of what I didn't like! This was really a cute story and a good read. Nothing deep or profound, just a fun read! I really liked it, so I urge you to give it a shot! less
