review 1: This was in now way one of the best high-fantasy series that I've read, but it also wasn't one of the worst. The characters are good. They're well rounded and it's refreshing to see them being not entirely good or bad, but ambiguous in their behaviour and morals and just completely human. The world is interesting, though I sometimes felt like the descriptions and explanations of the "magical element" to the world was kept a bit too vague and it sometimes felt hard to grasp its rules and specifics. The storyline has a lot of potential, though the stuff actually happening could have well been completed within a singular novel, or maybe too. It felt drawn out in some cases and looking back on the plot of the individual books, I can hardly recall any specifics.Overall, good char... moreacters and great story potential that unfortunately lacked in a well exercised world building and plot-unfolding.
review 2: Kiernan took on way too much to finish in three books, which makes most of book 2 superfluous to the series as a whole and makes book 3 (The Rebel Prince) feel rushed and incomplete. The ending is sudden, in the sense that it feels like the author got tired of writing or ran out of pages and so just ended the story without really tying together all the loose ends. She answers the obvious questions raised by her plot, but leaves a lot hanging. The third book doesn't live up to the promise of the first. less
