review 1: It wasn't the easiest thing to understand the Merron customs and way of life and I have to say I didn't like things being quite vague several times, but the overall story was intriguing and I am looking forward to the last book. You can see actual development in the characters and I like how they and and things in general are morally ambivalent in the story, adding a much more realistic feel to the world and its story. However, I also don't feel like this series is anything special or particularly new, so while it is an okay read, I don't expect the series to make it onto any of my favourite lists.
review 2: The writing in this book is brilliant in the way it made you feel for the characters. Which is not to say I liked it. I was lukewarm on the book overall, bu
... moret I admire the author because she really manipulated my emotions so well.I ended up genuinely caring about Chris and Razi. I worried for them and wanted them to be okay. I also had crushes on both of them, and when this happens you know the characters are drawn carefully because I'm picky on the characters I fall for! I admit I didn't care as much about Wynter but maybe the bar was higher with her because she was the narrator and it's harder to show both the inside and outside of someone equally well. I even cared about the twins, even though they weren't around very long. I guess talking about their part in the plot is too much of a spoiler, but suffice it to say even though I knew it was just a book I was very upset in the end. I wasn't so keen on the endless sociological commentary. I am not fond of having an author's thoughts about religion and culture shoved down my throat so forcefully, and this series is pretty heavy handed in that arena. Also I find too many action scenes in books tedious, because it's hard to read about something like a swordfight. How much is there really to say without it being repetitive? So I would read these for the crush factor and the character drama and not so much for the rest of the plot. less

A bit long-winded in the middle, but excited at the end of the story
