review 1: Kiernan, C. (2014). Into the Grey. Berryville: Candlewick Press. Kirkus Star Review/ Fiction (paranormal)As a lover of a good ghost story this book intrigued me. The book did not disappoint as this unique paranormal tale kept me reading happily. After a fire at their house the family is forced to move to a seaside cottage. A boring place for the brothers, since it’s not tourist time. Anyway the mystery begins and eventually one of the brothers is possessed by the spirit of a soldier. Fun story and would recommend for any person who loves a spooky tale. Although I enjoyed this book and it was for 7th grade and up, I don’t see it being something used in the classroom.
review 2: After their grandmother accidentally burns down their house, fifteen-year
... more-old twins Dom and Patrick Finnerty go to stay in the vacation cottage that they usually rent with their other relatives. For some reason, the ghost of a boy who died decades ago, begins to haunt the dreams of some of their family members. To Pat's horror, his brother disappears since a ghost has chosen to take over his body. The story is creepy, and Pat tries desperately to save his brother while also knowing that the creature who is sleeping in the bunk bed above his is certainly not his brother; nor can it be trusted. As the mystery behind the ghost's identity and purpose for haunting Dom becomes clearer, it's interesting to see their grandmother and an elderly neighbor in an entirely different light. While I enjoyed the first two thirds of the book as well as the parts about WWI thoroughly, once they begin to inhabit the grey, my interest flagged a bit. Still, the book was well worth reading, and I liked all of the characters, including the twins' mother and her kindness toward her mother-in-law. less
