review 1: This book is basically a guide to developing emotional intelligence in a way that everyone can apply to their jobs and to the rest of their lives, and in a way that can even be used as a curriculum for corporate programs. It uses some simplified mindfulness meditation practices (I like how he introduces them as "the easy way" and "the easier way") along with a variety of other introspection and communication exercises. There are even scripts provided for leading the exercises right out of the box. The "scientific" definition of meditation provided here is "a family of mental training practices that are designed to familiarize the practitioner with specific types of mental processes." That's a bit like meditation with its head chopped off, but I appreciate that if you do wa... morent to do this stuff in a work environment, you'll usually have to leave out the G-words (God/Guru). The strictly intellectual approach will also get more people involved who are put off by anything devotional but can understand the basic process of mind optimization. That's how I got going initially, myself. Meng's writing is casual and humorous (the cartoons are fun, too). His engineer's perspective gives it a bit of character without being alienating to non-engineers.
review 2: This book provides an interesting and somewhat useful introduction to meditation, but that's about it. It teaches you about why meditation might be really useful, as well as how you can start meditating. The start to the how-to was the most useful to me. I'm going to give meditation a shot for a while, and this gave me a straightforward way to pursue that. I found the evidence supporting the benefits of meditation to be less than completely convincing, but still suggestive enough for me to try it. As for changing your life, eh… I don't know that this book really gives you the tools for that. The examples of that were pretty sparing and not all that believable. If you're interested in learning about meditation, I would give this book a moderate recommendation, but, if not, I'd take a pass. less

I am a huge fan of "Search Inside Yourself" but the narrator of this book was very hard to follow.
