review 1: What I enjoy about most books I read is the story-telling, the ability by the author to weave an interesting tale, and that was true for me for this book, but what stood out most to me in this book was the perfect imperfect humanity of the characters. Each character in this book makes choices, some falling in line with societal mores, some deviating from said line, and every choice was understandable, every failure to honor promises a simple human failure any of us could make. Each character in this book, as in life, struggles to do what's best in each situation, and, as in life, it is not always clear what's best. Having recently read some suspense novels, in which the thinking and acting was more black and white, I appreciated the shades of gray that felt more true to... more life for me from this novel.
review 2: Very well-written, especially the way she switched voices so well for each character. Wasn't really sure what point she was trying to make? That rich men tend to cheat and low-income people tend to be criminals and druggies? Or that women tend to be overwhelmed and hormonal after birth? Or that it's better to follow your boyfriend to the ends of the Earth instead of staying with a job and location you enjoy? less

It was alright. A little slow at times, but a good read.

Grim, depressing, and grey -- but gorgeously written.
