review 1: 3.5 starsI love books set in Nazi Germany during WWII, and was excited about this one because it was a different angle in a different plac (France); however I felt the writing, although full of information about architecture, just wasn't up to the quality I expect to give it a 4-point rating. I found myself doing a lot of skimming just to be able to finish it. Read as a Kindle library loan on our Panama Canal cruise.
review 2: Surprisingly good story about an ambitious, anti-semitic, self-involved young architect living in Paris during WWII who is contracted by a wealthy gentile industrialist to create undetectable hiding places inside Parisian apartments where Jews on the run can hide till the gentile is able to smuggle them out. In exchange for these highly d... moreangerous projects, the gentile arranges for the architect to design buildings for the Nazis, from which he can build both wealth and a professional reputation.Though the story is really good, the writing is surprisingly flatfooted...a more animated, engaging style would have really made this a terrific novel. less
