X'ed Out Trilogy
review 1: X'ed Out reminded me a lot of Dan Clowes' Like A Velvet Glove Cast In Iron. They both share a creepy surrealism, filled with nighmarish images of beautiful girls taking selfies of themselves in bondage, maggots with faces being eaten, cutting parties, and more. All this squeamish grosseology is buffered by Charles Burns' beautiful artwork, which never diappoints. Someone said all the weirdness doesn't really go anywhere; she's probably right. Someone else said it's all ripped off from Tintin; he's probably right, too. But this book feels like a roller coaster ride through one of my bad dreams, and if Burns is at the wheel that's all I need to know.
review 2: I have practically NO idea what's going on exactly in Charles Burns' new series but I DO know that readi
... moreng it was unsettling and the visuals made my eyes bug out of my head. Burns is a master of surreal horror and "X'ed Out" is a fitting addition to his work; it's a crazy mind-fuck that leaves me wanting more. Maybe it'll be more coherent as it goes along, maybe not. Either way, it's a pleasure to get lost in Burns' panels, no matter how crazy, scary, or confusing they may be. less

Eh... kind of interesting, but also kind of pretentious.
