Mr Toppit himself never makes and appearance; he is a character in the Hayseed Chronicles, a book written decades ago that languished unloved, until by a curious twist of fate and the death of its author, it suddenly explodes into the public consciousness. But it wasn't just about Mr Toppit--the chronicles' main character was Luke Hayseed, who was modeled on the author's son. In “Mr Toppit” Charles Elton has created a fairy-tale within a tale, with suitably Grimm-like ominous overtones. The story of the Hayman family runs parallel to that of Luke Hayseed, a character created by Luke’s father in the Hayseed Chronicles, a famous series of children’s books that features Mr Toppit. Elton has pulled off quite a coup with this clever, engrossing debut novel in which he deftly balances an atmosphere of creeping evil with a darkly humorous depiction of the phenomenon of celebrity. less
