review 1: I really liked this book. I can't really say why tho. I don't think I completely "got it" either. I just liked the style and the way it was written. There were all these additional layers that I think just passed me by as I was waiting for some big boot to drop at the end or a twist or a something. There isn't one. It's just a story about lives. About bizarre lives, but just about lives, none the less. I liked it :) Ps. It's another book I got for book club based on the BBC 5Live's Book Reviews with Simon Mayo review.
review 2: I really enjoyed this book but the reason I am not rating it higher is because it was not the story I was expecting. The premise of the story was really intriguing and I wanted to learn more about the mysterious Mr Toppit. I think I was
... moreexpecting a fantasy element and I was a little disappointed that I did not get it. And this was not the only part that left me feeling unsatisfied. Although I enjoyed that certain aspects of the plot were hinted at rather than fully explained but at times this tended towards the annoying especially with the connection/ obsession between Laurie and Arthur. I waited desperately for this to be explained but it was never dealt with making her emotional over reactions to a man she barely met feel out if place. I would also like to have been given more back story on the relationship between Arthur and Martha, as well as more about Jordan. It felt to me like this plot line needed to be further elaborated on as the development of what happened by itself just didn't feel enough by itself to fully justify characters reactions or explain their behaviour towards others. I started to panic as I neared the end of the book and realised that there was no way that all my questions were going to be answered in the short amount of pages left. The end baffled me and I felt cheated that the immense promise that this book appeared to offer was never realised. An interesting book but not one that I would recommend to others. less

This was great. Kept me guessing to the end, and the characterisation was fresh and convincing.

Well written but not as compelling as it promised to be.
