review 1: There aren't many LGBTQ young adult books for Puerto Rican youth so I appreciate very much that this exists. It gets into some real stuff about having a street identity and how hard it can be to want to be different from the self you were for many years and the self your people expect you to be. I like the tone and what I perceive to be culturally relevant real talk. For YA lit, there's more sexual content than I'm used to, and I think that's a really good thing because it's more real about physical intimacy than most YA lit. Not the most incredibly written piece of literature, but it doesn't need to be. Glad to have this on my classroom book shelf.
review 2: "Chulito" tells the story of a 16 year old boy living in Hunts Point. The neighborhood has it's very ow
... moren rules and being (openly) gay isn't tolerated by most of the people. The moment Chulito realized that he is falling for Carlos his everyday life becomes very difficult and his small, well known world is turned upside down. Carlos doesn't want to hide their feelings for each other and suddenly Chulito has to make his choice. This book is very special and illustrated the coming-out of a teenage boy in a difficult and even dangerous surounding. 3 stars for this sweet young romance. less

A heartwarming story worthy of the beach or a week in San Francisco on vacation, where I read it.

had some pretty graphic moments, but it did show the struggles and had a pretty good storyline

An NPR reco., better suited for teenage readers than 40 somethings.
