review 1: I was trying to get the flavor of the WWI atmosphere and this was described as a Christmas tale. I enjoyed the light story written by this mother and son team. The main character was under the care of a guardian until she was 30 so when she found caught up with two suitors, and the war milling around and she found she had an aptitude to nursing that she became involved. She was Scottish nobility and nursing was thought to be for the poorer classes. For a light short story showing personal traumas, this was fine. The walnut tree was involved with Christmas decorations. People we pleasant, for the most part so this is a pleasant story not a violent story.
review 2: This is the story of Lady Elspeth Douglas who becomes engaged to her close friend's older bro
... morether Alain in France just as WWI breaks out. Feeling the need to be useful after her experience with the wounded soldiers on her return to England where she encounters Captain Peter Gilchrist who rescues her from the battlefield, she trains as a nurse and returns to France. Lady Elspeth finds herself attracted to Captain Gilchrist and she must choose between her fiancé, a prisoner of the Germans and the Captain. The book is interesting and a satisfying read. I highly recommend this book. less

This was a good, quick read. However, I like my Christmas books to be more Christmas related.

Tedious. No good character development. It did not move me.

Sweet book, I wished it was longer. Or maybe a sequel?
